Instead of connecting it to the headlight wires, I hooked it up to the “parking” light at the lower-right side of the headlight housing. I just pulled the bulb out of the headlight, soldered the ends of the meter’s wires to the prongs on the bulb socket, stuck the female connections back on and pushed the bulb and socket back into the headlight shell. I then ran the wires up toward the handlebars and installed the voltmeter against the brake reservoir. I placed a piece of stick-on Velcro on the reservoir, so that its top was just below the reservoir lid.
I then stuck the other piece of Velcro to the back of meter.
The GM Fuel Gauge Mystery & Newer. From up to the late ’s, GM decided to change the Ohm (Ω) reading coming out of the fuel sender from 0 – 30Ω to 0 – 90Ω (0 empty – 90 full) which allows the gauge to be a little more accurate. That’s right, the fuel sender produces an ohm signal.
See More Autometer Voltmeter Experts say that the best electrical system monitoring device that you can use for your car is the voltmeter. It is an instrument utilize in measuring the electrical force by units otherwise known as volts. This instrument is essentially linked parallel with the circuit being tested. Unlike the ammeter, which is also an electric device that can only measure up the current battery amount like for recharging applications, the voltmeter can tap into the circuit especially the electricity.
And one of the best voltmeter products today is created by Autometer. The Autometer voltmeter is easy and safe to install, you just have to hook it up to the fuse, at the ignition switch that is the on and off source is situated or sometimes it is mounted at the dash but this instrument is considered as a stand alone circuit. This voltmeter significantly calculates the output of charging system performance.
What’s good about using the voltmeter is that, although the alternator system fails and the voltage drops due to the battery discharges, the voltmeter can still provide an accurate and exact data compared to the ammeter. To sum it up, the voltmeter is safe to use provided that it features an easy and safe installation process and giving a more useful and accurate information regarding the charging-system conditions.
When it comes to aftermarket replacement of auto parts and accessories, Parts Train is one of the good sites that you can visit. We present an online catalog where we display our wide choices of Autometer voltmeters and other Autometer products. All our products here are fresh from the manufacturer’s factories. So from gauges to memory cards, they will surely give you a long lasting performance and couple it with style as well.

Actually, it took more time to explain than it really did to do the inspection. At any rate we decided that a compression test was in order so we could verify the internal engine status. That way we wouldn’t buy any tune up parts until we were sure that the engine was in reasonable mechanical condition. Our tests showed a fictional compression reading of 85, 80, 82 and 86 psi. That is well within accepted parameters of a 15 psi spread.

Need Help Adding a Voltmeter That’s why I replaced my gauges with digital readouts and added gauges where there are none. I still think you’ll need a full Farad cap to keep the volt meter steady. And so what if the voltage wiggles some, learn to accept a few thousandths up and down; the moon will not spin out of orbit. As for the meter being a constant drain on the battery, just wire it in on the on-off side of the key switch. I think the point being made was that depending on the sampling rate for the meter, it may not lock on, and thus may roll alot. It didn’t come with installation instructions or wiring. Take a look at the picture and confirm the connections for me.

Back of speedometer, fuel, and temp gauge From the passenger side which is left to right in the picture: Fuel Gauge S Terminal – pink wire from fuel sender Fuel Gauge A Terminal – 12v side of jumper strap to temperature gauge Fuel Gauge I Terminal – red wire ignition-on hot 12v Temperature Gauge A Terminal – jumper from fuel gauge A terminal jumper strap to regulated voltage Temperature Gauge S Terminal – Purple wire from temperature sender Some manuals and gauges have the S and A terminals reversed on the temperature gauge.
You can see the letters stamped in the insulation material around the posts. Either way, there is only one circuit loop inside the temperature gauge.
This shot up under the dash shows the gauge harness installed onto the mounted gauges. like the programmable speedometer that eliminated the need for a speedometer cable and a change from an ammeter to a voltmeter.
Josh from Wicked Wire Works up near Cessnock was working on a customers HR and one of the problems was the fuel gauges wouldn’t come below Full, so I got him to send me the sender and the gauge. When I got them the gauges had been disassembled so I tested it out and then cleansed it out polished the lens inside and out and then reassembled it. The Fuel sender had a big problem, the brass strap that connects the internal resistance card to the external terminal that the sender wire connects to had snapped off.
So I pulled it totally apart and cleaned up the card and soldered the internal connections, I then drilled a new hole through the end of the strap and refitted and soldered it into position. Now the fuel gauge works perfectly. Someone has converted it to electric wipers. Problem is it appears to be missing the arm off the motor to connect it to the linkages- Has anyone done this conversion???? Anyway I have wired it up , thanks to Aaron from All Car Recreations for supplying with the required plugs to make it all fit like factory- Aaron makes all OE quality looms for early cars.
Finally I had a look at the speedo and it wasn’t connected and when I tested it I found it was seized. So out it came for a rebuild.

Posted by Vintage on 17th Nov I have had mine for about 8 years I think , it has been transferred to several bikes, and has never failed in any rainstorm , no matter how severe. A must to have if you have heated gear on low wattage bikes. It prevented me from mounting it where I was planning.
Posted by ride on 18th Nov I have owned this now for about 2 years and haven’t yet written a review.
Style Line 2″ Electrical Voltmeter Gauge (White Face) – FST 8205
The speedometer cluster contains 2 gauges. The fuel gauge and the temperature gauge. There are 3 bulbs to illuminate the speedometer and have a blue filter over the bulb. This makes it necessary to use the correct bulb size so as not to melt the filter.
With a digital voltmeter attached to the battery post in the engine compartment, very carefully hook up the white gauge plate to the dash by the three connectors and run the engine (make sure all accessories are turned off in this procedure!) until the value of volts is read on the digital.
Click on “What are the general wiring colors used on Mercury outboard engines? I checked my service manual and there is no mention of one. At some point it does explain how it sends the signal to the unit. Well then that’s all the info you need. Go buy that trim gauge. They terminate in the engine just on the inside of the where the rigging hose enters the cowling. Also may be buried in tape and Ty-wraps. So you run the sender into the engine.
The ends of the wires have butt connectors on them that match the sender, if there is one. In my case the engine transom frame was already tapped for sender screws, so between that and the pre-existing wiring in the bundle, adding the trim gauge was almost trivially easy.
One-Wire Alternators: Are They Better Or Just Easier To Hook up?
Click to jump to this section. Karmann Ghias and Buses had them even before this. The gauge used on the Beetle from ’68 onward is a thermally-actuated design. It is not a new concept; Ford used gauges similar to this as early as the ‘s and it probably goes back even further. Here’s the basic concept: The rheostat varies the current flowing into the fuel gauge on the dash.
Know exactly what your F’s performance is at any time with a set of interior gauges. Some gauges can be specify made for temperature, pressure or speed but others are universal, which means these gauges can be used for whatever you hook them up to.
This part is now being repro’ed. You can now purchase it from Chevy 2 Only: Other ammeters run all of the current through the gauge. If you hook up the stock gauge in this manner, you will cook the gauge. This one works a bit differently. It looks for the current drop across a resistor shunt and uses that instead of a direct current measurement: Here is the original SS wiring diagram: The main power goes from the battery to one side of the shunt via a 12 gauge red wire, and then from the other side of the shunt to the horn relay via a 12 gauge black wire.
Everything on the car except for the starter is supplied power via the lug on the horn relay. The diagram shows that the ammeter is connected to the lugs on the shunt by two 18 gauge black wires. This is the factory setup.

Remove your old A-pillar. Begin by gently removing the screw cover in the top of the A-pillar Then you can use your T bit and remove the screw. Pull the A-pillar off It has two metal clips near the bottom and the middle, as well as a plastic pin near the top 2. Prep the new A-pillar and mount the gauge. You’ll want to remove the factory mounting brace for the boost gauge which we’re not using.
You could leave it in there, as it is an Auto Meter gauge from the factory – however, your voltmeter will be rotated 90 degrees from how it should be.
Simple, One-Wire Hook Up As you might assume, the concept behind a one-wire alternator is that there is a single wire used to connect the alternator to the battery. The voltage regulator is internal, and there are no other wires that need to be connected to your electrical system.
Where do you hook up a voltmeter gauge in 86 Chev ? Pin out for Monte Carlo instrument cluster connector. Pin Circuit Color Connects to. Anywhere where there is a switched supply. What does a voltmeter measure? A voltmeter or multimeter is an electrical instrument capable of measuring voltage, current, and resistance. Digital multimeters have numerical displays, like digital clocks, for indicating the quantity of voltage, current, or resistance.
Analog multimeters indicate these quantities by means of a moving pointer over a printed scale. How does the voltmeter work?
